Three wacky weird, bizarre, odd, violent, unusual, transgressive, disturbing and erotic films. Not suitable neither for any mind nor stomach.
Metaminds and Metabodies passes in the Hell's anteroom, at this side of the mirror through which one day abominable beings will enter and will conquer the Earth, fulfilling Yellow Emperor's prophecy. Morfing is a delirious trip for the quasi-infernal independent cinema underworld. Welcome to Spain is a decrease to a total Hell where those that have not been invited to the party eat rusty nails. Metaminds and Metabodies, Morfing and Welcome to Spain (together with a milky introduction by actress Arantxa Peña) shape the CODEX ATANICUS.
If Carlos Atanes was not so worthy and nice we would think that he's a dangerous madman, since only from a disturbed mind should sprout the ghosts that appear in this trilolgy of bizarre, unclassifiable and damned shortfilms (1995-1999) opportunely assembled in this selection. Damned, yes: scarcely seen in 1990's, they were just projected in alternative places (where more than one ashtray was smashed against the screen), they provoked the explicit rejection from all the TV channels which they were proposed to and only Welcome to Spain was repudiated by more than 30 international film festivals.
Nevertheless, since they have been presented together the audience and critics reaction has been almost unanimous on both Atlantic Ocean's shores: CODEX ATANICUS deserves be seen, and already it's a cult film. For many motives: the skinned singer recital, the throwing fetus, the intolerable orgy at the stairs, the pork's feet snack, the wacky dialogs and, certainly, the first bukkake scene ever filmed for a not pornographic movie (and the first one filmed in Spain), a sequence systematicly banned in Internet which can be at last entirely enjoyed in this DVD.
A wacky film feast for gourmets of the bizarre cinema.

"CODEX ATANICUS was a very good experience into the world of bizarre storytelling and surreal imagery that kept me glued to the screen."
(Anthony Thurber, Film Arcade)

"The director of these wild and crazy fucked up movies can best be described as the next David Lynch with a little bit of David Cronenberg thrown in for good measure."
(Gorehounds Unite!)

""Codex Atanicus" is a collection of the three most twisted short films by Spanish director Carlos Atanes. The three shorts, "Metaminds & Metabodies", "Morfing" and "Welcome to Spain" will take you into a movie universe few people have found before."
(Ronny Carlsson, Film Bizarro)

"Carlos Atanes seems to be an uncompromising director, who doesn't take the easy way out. That is the big part (along with the bunch of great actors and actresses) of extraordinary feel that gushes from Atanes' intriguing low-budget or no-budget films. Even the grainy image of video camera fits perfectly into the bizarre imagery. There are no holds barred, so you have been warned."
(Esa Linna, Extraordinary Movies & Video Guide)

"A feature film, one of which should probably not be viewed unless drunk, on drugs or deranged. It is a little bit Fellini, a little bit Ed Wood, a little bit John Waters and all weird."
(Dale Pierce, (Re) Search My Trash)

"Atanes proudly follows in the footsteps of fellow Spanish surrealist filmmakers Luis Bunuel and Fernando Arrabal and has crafted a trio of bizarrely demented short films."
(Mike Everleth, Bad Lit)

"Definitely not a story collection for everyone. Carlos Atanes makes completely strange scenarios very interesting with his powerful visuals. While I though this would be some crappy experimental wannabe art master piece, I must say that I quite enjoyed it. This is the first thing I need to show to my movie watching buddies."

"it’s more of a revival of classical European arthouse surrealism than it is a continuation of newer, punkier trends in underground film."
